Pascoe Vale vs. Richmond SC
Football Manager’s take: Dull contest with no real chances of note until past the half hour mark where Davey van ‘t Schip scuffed his lines from an acute angle. Hamlet Armenian struck the upright from a similar angle in a rare forward movement for Richmond before the contest was decided by a Tomi Milardovic own goal, created by Chris Grossman (with Sunshine in real life). Pascoe Vale put in an accomplished passing display, which helped create a number of openings
Man of the Match: Chris Grossman (8.3)
Our take: Pascoe Vale may be getting somewhat desperate about now after a barren month, and will have to be wary of a Richmond side that has had a decent run of late.
Melbourne Knights vs. Hume City
Football Manager’s take: FM predicts a miserable contest, bereft of any real quality or composure for the majority of the 90 minutes, only for a special cross from Tom Cahill to be turned in by fellow Englishman Nick Hegarty in the 82nd minute. Think a bout of aerial ping-pong as both sets of defences were forced to repel wave after wave of lofted balls forward.
Man of the Match: Milan Batur (8.7)
Our take: Knights have been plugging along in recent weeks, picking up a few narrow wins and draws. However a big test comes this week against Hume, who will be fired up a home defeat against South Melbourne that yielded a yellow card.
Green Gully vs. Bulleen Lions
Football Manager’s take: For the sake of everyone at the Veneto Club, I hope the game doesn’t turn out anything like its simulated counterpart. Not a single highlight to talk about.
Man of the Match: Lewis Waddell (7.7)
Our take: It was difficult enough without Matthew Breeze, but with Liam Boland also out for a couple of weeks the task will be even harder for Gully against the disciplined Bulleen, who are beginning to look like consolidating themselves as a mid-table side.
Northcote City vs. Avondale FC
Football Manager’s take: FM finally dished out an exciting game with chances flowing at both ends. Michael Cunningham dispatched a Ryan Go cross in the 11th minute but the offside flag denied him the opener. Abraham Yango’s cross found Alex Khrapko for the opener, before he then hit the post with a header soon after. Calvin Mbarga bundled home an equaliser before youngster Aron Handakis headed Northcote into the lead from a corner kick. Khrapko headed in his second to equalise once more before Gregory Lombardo steered in the winner for Northcote at the other end.
Man of the Match: Oleksiy Khrapko (8.8)
Our take: It goes from bad to worse for Northcote, whose loss to Heidelberg was compounded by red cards to Handakas and Gavalas. Avondale were so close to gaining their first win against Oakleigh last week and will fancy their chances in this one.
Melbourne Victory vs. Oakleigh Cannons
Football Manager’s take: FM predicts a high-octane game between two attacking sides, both of whom put in a good shift despite the scoreline. John Honos spilt Joey Katebian’s free-kick on the stroke of half-time to give the Victory a lead heading into the break. A heroic save at the death from Lewis Spinella ensured the points went to the Victory.
Man of the Match: Joey Katebian (8.3)
Our take: A few heavy defeats for Victory against top-six sides have been accompanied by an injury to star striker Joey Katebian, and the challenge won’t be any easier against an in-form Oakleigh Cannons.
South Melbourne vs. Bentleigh Greens
Football Manager’s take: A cross from Brad Norton was cushioned down by Milos Lujic, laid off for NickEpifano to hit the back of the net. Epifano then missed a penalty and was made to pay by Chris Lucas who hit back to equalise.
Man of the Match: Matthew Millar (7.4)
Our take: A ripper Grand Final re-match that could go either way, with both sides unable to separated at the top of the ladder at the moment. Will this continue or will one team pull ahead with a win?
Heidelberg United vs. Port Melbourne Sharks
Football Manager’s take: Sean Ellis rolled a shot into the back of the net from Les Doumbalis’ low cross. David Stirton soon equalised with an emphatic finish from close range
Man of the Match: Andrew Viola (7.9)
Our take: Heidelberg’s form has been sensational of late, working their way up the ladder to sit in fourth. Port have also been performing well and this could be tight encounter.
