South Melbourne Women’s coach Bill Mihaloudis admits his side could have won by a larger margin, despite relying on two injury time goals to beat Boroondara 4-2 in their WPL clash on Saturday afternoon.
The head coach conceded his girls were a little slow getting out of the blocks, and then rued the fact that they didn’t go on with the momentum when they did find their feet.
“It took us a little while to get out of gear, and then when we got out of gear we backed off a little bit which let them back into the game,” Mihaloudis said.
“It just got to the point where it was a bit of a tug match for a while, but it was quite good to be able to still show the experience and keep the head down as well.
A scoreless first half was turned on its head as South scored twice early in the second half.
Two goals to the Eagles however had the game all square and Mihaloudis put their comeback down to some weary legs.
“Yeah look we tired off, I could see that our legs were getting a bit tired hence the reason why we made [some] changes,” he said.
“Once those changes occurred then we could start to settle down a little bit and then we started to play our game with fresh legs and score those goals when we had too.”
Those goals both came in added time and whilst the two-goal buffer wasn’t a perfect representation of the close fought contest, Mihaloudis believes the end score line didn’t flatter his side.
“I wouldn’t say it flattered us, I mean at the end of the day we missed some great opportunities,” the coach said.
“We had control of the game where we knew that if we put those goals through we could have been four goals up at half-time so in that respect it was quite good.
South now have the opportunity to extend their winning start to the WPL season when they take on Sandringham SC on Monday night, with Mihaloudis declaring his side is slowly reaching their peak.
“I think were slowly starting to get to our form,” he said.
“We’ve got a long way to go still. There’s still areas that we’re working on that we need to fix up but for this time of year I’m very happy with where we’re at and I’m comfortable with the way we’re progressing.
“Two from two I can’t complain.”
South Melbourne Women’s travel to Kingston Heath to take on unbeaten Sandringham SC on Monday night. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:30pm.
