Speaking at full-time on Sunday night, Heidelberg United coach John Kyrgios said he was “ecstatic” with his side’s 2-0 victory over Boroondara Eagles at the Knox Regional Football Centre.
Heidelberg now find themselves adrift of the top five by only goal difference, ensuring a compelling contest against fifth place Sandringham SC this Saturday afternoon.
“I am very happy. I’m ecstatic,” Kyrgios said after the final whistle.
“We’ve finally won and we’ve got a clean sheet away from home, so we are three points closer to this particular team who were way ahead of us.”
With plenty of positives to take out of Sunday night, Kyrgios is hoping his side can extend their new found form into next weekend.
Sandringham though will enter the contest after snapping a three game losing streak, conquering table dwellers Monbulk Rangers on Monday night.
“Lots of positive,” the head coach said.
“We are looking forward to it so we are very happy after that and hopefully we can push on.”
Another pleasing aspect for Kyrgios would be the form of goalkeeper Kelsey Quinn after a stellar performance between the post on Sunday night.
Heidelberg’s shot-stopper was forced into a number of crucial saves and delivered when it counted in a player-of-the-match performance.
“She’s a quality keeper and all it is is just a bit of confidence and she’s shown her worth tonight,” Kyrgios said.
“She pulled off two one-on-ones in the first half and her handling was just exceptional.
“She kept us in the game and we were just talking as we were walking off, if you’ve got a quality keeper you’ve always got a chance.”
Kyrgios may however have to do without left-back Angie Rassias who was withdrawn after 56 minutes with a suspected ankle sprain.
With a injury clouds hovering over a few players, Heidelberg’s boss is nevertheless expecting his side to pull through.
“It’s exciting times for us, hopefully we can get over these injuries a couple more went down tonight but I’m sure we’ll be right.”
Heidelberg United will host Sandringham SC on Saturday afternoon at Olympic Village. Kick-off for the match is scheduled for 3:00pm
