Bisby thunderbolt stuns Bergers

Bundoora United have moved to the top of the WPL table, maintaining their unbeaten start to the season after defeating Heidelberg United 1-0 at Olympic Village on Saturday.

In a tight contest, all it took was a moment of brilliance from Louisa Bisby to make the difference.

The first 20 minutes represented a cagey affair, with both teams attempting to boss the midfield and very few opportunities being created – the best chance falling to the visitors when Tyla-Jay Vlajonic’s cross-cum-shot floated just over the bar.

The breakthrough came midway through the half.

Following a strong team move, the ball broke on the edge of the box for Louisa Bisby, who hit a powerful and curling shot into the top right corner from 25 yards despite the best efforts of Kelsey Quinn, who did get a finger to the shot.

Despite the goal, the game continued to be tight, with chances at an absolute premium.

Enza Barilla fired over on 30 minutes as Bundoora managed to penetrate the defence.

Five minutes before the break, Heidelberg almost had an equaliser when Ellie Gavalas saw her long range volley ricochet off the crossbar, with Bethany Mason-Jones beaten.

Both sides had chances early in the second half as the game opened up a little.

Elly Curo was guilty of firing wide three minutes in after being picked out wonderfully by Vlajnic.

Julia Nicolaci then saw her shot blocked soon after, as the hosts looked for a way back into the contest.

Substitute Belinda Pannella then went close to finding a goal following a good team move, but her shot flew just over the crossbar.

With time running out, Quinn made a wonderful one-on-one save to deny Stacey Papadopolous as Bundoora took advantage of Heidelberg pushing numbers forward.

She then denied Jess Au to keep the deficit at one.

However, her teammates could not find a goal, and Bundoora deservedly held on to claim an impressive away win and maintain their unbeaten start to the season, consolidating top spot on the WPL ladder.
