Boroondara back to dominant ways

Boroondara Eagles claimed a second four-goal win over South Melbourne Women’s FC this season, playing out a 4-0 result at Lakeside Stadium.

Having beaten South comprehensively 6-2 in their last meeting at Knox, it was much the same this time around as the Eagles stormed into a 3-0 lead before half time.

Taryne Boudreau opened the scoring with an unstoppable finish, while Hubbard made it a quick double a minute later.

Sarah Jacobs made it three with a determined header, while Boudreau wrapped it up after the break, making South pay for a defensive lapse.

In truth, the scoreline could have been much worse without the help of Frances Land, who made several crucial blocks to deny the Eagles even more goals.

It was the visitors who started better in freezing conditions, forcing Land into an early save in just the second minute of the game.

While the Eagles pressured South into coughing up possession constantly, they were unable to get into a decent rhythm in the first 20 minutes.

Katherine Goff was a spark for the home side whenever she was serviced up front, and her effort in the 19th minute sailed wide to just break some of the Eagles’ momentum.

But the visitors sprung into life from that slight scare, and forced Land into two saves in two minutes.

The first came as a result of Land clearing a ball into the back of Boudreau, then making up for it by batting the shot away as the Canadian forward attempted to finish, and the second saw Land slide out to block a one-on-one attempt with Amy Jackson.

Just past the half hour, the Eagles finally breached the defences of South when Boudreau rifled in a precision finish into the top-left corner, leaving Land standing and admiring.

It was two just a minute later, when a Rani Cavaretta free kick eventually made its way to Emma Hubbard, who drove a finish into the left of the goal.

South Melbourne were struggling to cope with the Eagles at this point, but could’ve thrown a spanner in the works when Nat Martineau swung in a teasing ball from the right wing.

Unfortunately for South, Brittany Dudley-Smith’s free header was thumped wide of the goals.

The Eagles made South pay just before the break, when from an in-swinging Amy Jackson cross, Sarah Jacobs leaped forward with intent to bury a header into the back of the net.

They continued on after the break, forcing Land into a couple more saves early in the half.

Dudley-Smith had another opportunity to pull a goal back in the 55th minute, but her finish lobbed straight into Anna Lanning’s grasp, summing up South’s afternoon.

Just four minutes later, Boudreau completed the scoring after hunting down Jade Feakes, who had dallied on the ball, then finishing into an empty net on the second attempt after Land saved the initial shot.

Apart from a couple more opportunities from Goff one-on-one with Lanning, South saw out the contest, with Land also dealing with any more danger for the rest of the game.
