Brunswick City’s search for their second win of the season continues after going down 5-1 at home against a clinical Kingston City FC.
Despite scoring first and with some speed on the counter-attack, Kingston confidently controlled the majority of the game, with both Gino Defeo and Max Etheridge netting braces.
Brunswick took a surprise lead within the first five minutes, after Kingston cleared a corner only for Nick Terezakis to slot the ball into the top corner from outside the box thanks to a slight deflection.
After Brunswick failed to capitalise on another chance quickly after, Kingston settled into the game, taking control of possession, pressing high and creating opportunities.
Their first few sights at goal were ambitious shots going wide; that was until George Stavridis connected with a cross in the 31st minute to tap home the equaliser with a superbly timed volley.
Kingston went on to take the lead only five minutes later with Gino Defeo’s first goal of the game, connecting with another cross from John Maclean.
They went into half-time with a goal’s lead to protect with Brunswick by no means out of it.
In fact, they were a bit unfortunate not to be heading into the rooms even as Dimitri Vithoulkas was unlucky not to equalize in the dying stages of the first half.
The home side had a couple of good chances early on and continued to find space down the right flank but couldn’t find a finishing touch.
Vithoulkas again had the best chances for Brunswick, but his effort early in the second only managed to hit the post.
Despite Brunswick’s best efforts to fight back, Kingston put the game further out of reach, with Max Etheridge scoring a goal against the run of play in the 62nd minute followed by a second minutes later, to put the game well out of reach.
Kingston’s final goal of the game was the best of the afternoon, as Gino Defeo scored his second in stunning fashion; a fancy acrobatic finish as he leapt in the air to smash home a volley.
The fifth goal of the night may have flattered the visitors a little bit, but there’s no doubt the goals being shipped by Brunswick is fast becoming a frustrating regularity in their first NPL1 season.
Brunswick travel to Richmond next Friday in what could prove yet another tough task. Kick-off is scheduled for 8.30 at Kevin Bartlett Reserve. For Kingston, it’s the long trip to Bendigo on Saturday night. Kick-off at Epsom Soccer Complex is scheduled for 7:00pm.
