Another Melbourne Victory W-League player has moved abroad, with captain Steph Catley signing with reigning American NWSL champions Portland Thorns.
It is a welcome boost for Catley ahead of this weekend’s Grand Final, whose excellent form this season has been recognised with her first move overseas.
The explosive wing back has made 13 appearances for the Victory this season, scoring a solitary goal while laying on three assists and providing countless amount of support for Victory’s attacking forays down the left flank.
She also brought up her 50th appearance for the club this season, a significant milestone showing her consistent form for the club over recent seasons.
Catley will team up with former Victory teammate Jessica McDonald at Portland, as well as USA superstar Alex Morgan, Canada’s all-time top scorer Christine Sinclair and FIFA World Player of the Year Nadine Angerer.
Portland also averaged an amazing 13,320 fans last season in their championship winning season, without a doubt a big drawcard for any footballer.
In a statement released on the Portland Thorns website, head coach Paul Riley was delighted with the signing, which will add a new dimension to his team.
“Steph will be a massive addition to our squad,” Riley said.
“She will bring added speed to our back line and has the ability to go end line to end line. She can provide width on the field and has great delivery and provides a physical presence.
“She is a fantastic signing for the club and her international experience will be extremely valuable in our quest for the title.”
Catley has also made 15 appearances for the Matildas, and has won many individual awards recognising her ability such as the Australian U20 Women’s footballer of the year on two occasions.
She will also be missed in the Women’s Premier League this season, having turned out for Sandringham over the years in the local competition.
