For the second year in a row, Hume City have been eliminated at the semi-final stage of the Dockerty Cup by an Arthur Papas-led side, succumbing 2-0 to Green Gully at JL Murphy Reserve.
Last year Hume were defeated by the same scoreline against Oakleigh Cannons, and in 2016 it was a dosage of déjà vu as two classy goals from Liam Boland and Jay Davies sunk the Broadmeadows-based outfit.
City’s Tom Cahill and Davies exchanged shots on goal early, none which troubled the scorers.
However, when Boland and Davies combined up front which led to a foul on the latter, the former stepped up and curled in a thunderous strike that left Oldfield no chance in goals.
Davies then got on to the ball just outside the area, which he shot over the bar, while Kym Harrris had chanes either side of the break which missed.
However, it was Davies – plucked from state league obscurity mid-season – who put the finishing touches on with a world-class goal.
A good passing move around the box saw Davied latch onto a one-two with Boland to flick the ball past a defender and chip it past the oncoming Oldfield.
Theo Markelis had a final opportunity to peg one back for Hume, but was thwarted by Rani Dowisha.
The result means Papas is in his second Dockerty Cup final, while Gully will look to emulate their cup-winning feats most recently achieved in 2013 when they face Bentleigh Greens.
