Jade Feakes has become Galaxy United’s third signing for the 2016 WNPL season.
The local spent the last number of years travelling to Melbourne to play for the NTC and South Melbourne, the latter with whom she won the WPL Championship in 2015.
She’ll now turn out for the Geelong and Surf Coast based club under new coach Vicenzo Ierardo.
A versatile defensive minded player, Feakes had featured at centre-back, fullback and defensive midfield at Lakeside throughout the season as the club went on to claim the Grand Final on penalties over premiers Boroondara Eagles.
She joins Laura Spiranovic – also a former South Melbourne player – along with Whitney Knight and Sky Jensen, as Galaxy’s inaugural signings for the year.
“When Vince offered me a position in the Galaxy WNPL team it was too good to refuse after so many years of travelling up to Melbourne,” Feakes told the club.
“It’s awesome that the opportunity has finally risen for females in this region to be able to compete in a high level of football. It’s great to be playing close to home and under Vince again who coached me at State.”
Ierardo expressed his delight to link up with a former player.
“I coached Jade a few years back and she did a fantastic job at state team level, after not seeing her over past recent years I wanted to confirm she was at a good level physically, and after the first trial it was a no-brainer to offer Jade a spot for the 2016 WNPL season,” Iearado said via Facebook.
“We want to promote local girls from the area, now the rest is up to Jade.”
