Returning to the Victorian Women’s Premier League after a season with W-League side Adelaide United, Boroondara Eagles’ latest recruit Alexandra Gummer is aiming for another season at the top of her game.
Building an impressive reputation at Casey Comets, Gummer grabbed the attention of Adelaide United, who signed the utility ahead of the 2013-14 season.
However, after only inking a one year deal, Gummer is striving for another impressive season in the WPL, with the hopes of earning a contract extension with the Reds.
“It’s defiantly contingent on what I do this winter,” Gummer said commenting on whether or not she will be offered a new contract.
Adelaide United team mate Rachel Quigley has also join Gummer at the newly promoted Boroondara, with the pair working towards solidifying their spots next season.
“[Rachel] has played W-League since its inception and is the most capped player for Adelaide so I think that it is a very good signing that we’ve got,” she said.
“My goal is to keep working hard and I’ve got Rachel over here so we are going to work hard and push each other so we can strive for selection next season.”
Gummer also discussed the positivity surrounding her new team-mates with an optimistic group planning to make an impact upon the WPL.
“I’ve only been back for about three weeks so I haven’t really gotten a grasp of much but from what I’ve seen so far its really looking forward to be a positive season,” she said.
“We’ve got a very young, up-and-coming side so not many names that we’ve [heard of], but I think during the course of the season we’ll have of a few [known] players.”
Gummer hinted towards some of the younger talent within the Eagles squad, predicting a few select names to make their mark on the WPL.
“Ellen Turner, she’s a great young spark and we’ve got a few others in the likes of Sarah Petty, she’s quite a pacy forward and I think she’s only 15 or 16 so I think they’re going to make their mark on this season,” she said.
Gummer will be looking to make her own mark on the season, specifically with a Round Four return to Comets Stadium on the cards.
“To be honest, I’m not looking forward to it at all – playing against my old team Casey.
“I’ve played for them since i was a little tacker so it’s a very important game which I just don’t want to lose.”
“They’ve had a lot of impact on my career. I started playing there when I was 14, when I was first eligible to play Premier League and they’ve enabled me to become the player that I am today.
“I thank Casey very much and the coach Ian Williamson as well.”
