It’s been a busy November for Heidelberg United, with the Warriors confirming the arrival of four new players for their 2015 roster while a further six from the 2014 squad have signed o for the upcoming campaign.
Headlining their acquisitions is Queenslander Reuben Way with the 24 year-old forward signing for the Bergers from Brisbane based NPL outfit Olympic FC.
Way was a key player in Olympic’s run to the FFA Cup Round of 16 where his former side were beaten by the Central Coast Mariners after having previously triumphed over the Melbourne Knights in the Round of 32.
Joining Way up front will be 22 year-old striker Kenny Athiu who links up with the side after an impressive three years leading the front line at Box Hill United.
Athiu will be determined to test himself out in the state’s top tier after coming close to gaining promotion with Pythagoras last season with the tall forward destined to be a fan favourite if he can make a similar impact in the yellow and black.
The pairs’ signing may pre-empt a different looking forward-line next season, with no news yet about the retention of Daniel Heffernan and Kaine Sheppard, who were trialling in England and Brisbane respectively.
Joining the two attackers at Olympic Village are midfielders Andreas Govas from Oakleigh Cannons and Jonathan Voulgaris from Pascoe Vale
Govas 25, struggled for game time at Oakleigh despite initially impressing manager Miron Bleiberg and his move north is expected to provide him with a starting birth in an already competitive midfield.
The former Young Socceroo is an ex-Heidelberg junior and has spent time overseas in England, Greece and France.
22 year-old winger Jonathan Voulgaris signs for the Warriors after spending the 2013 season at Pascoe Vale.
The former Northcote City man is expected to provide the side with plenty of pace and assists in the hole or down the wings at the Village.
The club also confirmed the re-signings of several 2014 squad members including club stalwart Les Doumbalis, Tasmanian midfielder Kosta Kanakaris, youngster Andy Cartanos, defender John Lazaridis, Queenslander Jack Petrie and veteran Daniel Vasilevski and will surely be hoping to improve on their solid 3rd place finish of last season.
Meanwhile Paul Miller has departed the club after 52 appearances for the club in the past couple of years with the club wishing the popular midfielder all the best for the future as he was unable to commit to the side due to work commitments.
