The four semi-finalists of the Team App Cup have been confirmed following wins to Heidelberg United and Boroondara Eagles last night in the quarter-finals.
The two clubs join Alamein FC and Bulleen Lions into the last four of the competition after the NPLW duo confirmed their progression last week.
Heidelberg came into the fixture with the clash being their fourth game in 10 days – including a 5-1 defeat against Alamein most recently – and had to endure another 120 minutes of play in their come-from-behind, extra time win.
With Melbourne Uni leading the State League 1 NW ladder, and having beaten South Melbourne on the weekend, they sensed a potential upset and took the lead in the opening minutes through Amelia Radford.
The Bergers had to work hard for the win thereafter, progressing only in extra time after goals to Belinda Pannella and Joey Cartwright on the night.
The win was marred by the absence of FFV match officials from the contest, with volunteers having to step into the officiating role.
Meanwhile, reigning champions Boroondara Eagles ended SL3 outfit Moreland Zebras’ dream run to the quarters with a 2-0 win.
A goals to former Caulfield Cobras player Puli Gariyawasam was followed by the killer blow from the penalty spot delivered by former Box Hill midfielder Elyse Kyrgios.
The result means the John Kyrgios-led Boroondara are the only state league side remaining in the competition, following on from their good form in SL1 SE, where they sit on top of the ladder.
Last week, Alamein FC prevailed over Bayside United 4-2, while Bulleen Lions overcame South Melbourne by the same scoreline.
The draw is set to be held on Tuesday June 14.
