Kingston prepared for tough encounter

Kingston City coach Nick Tolios is expecting his side to encounter a “good test” tomorrow afternoon against ladder leaders Avondale Heights.

Off the back of a resounding 5-2 victory over Sunshine George Cross on Monday night, Tolios is additionally hoping his side can go back to back, as they look to extend their new found form into the coming weeks.

“It’ll be a good test,” Tolios said after the match on Monday night.

“They’re a good side and they’re on top of the ladder for a reason.

“They are picking up results away and at home so it’ll be a good test for us.

“We are due for a couple of good games in a row so hopefully it happens this Saturday.”

Avondale will enter the contest nine points clear of second placed Bulleen, whom they defeated 3-1 on Monday night, but Tolios is adamant they league stands closer than the table suggests.

“Like I said at the start of the year this league is very open and any team on its day can beat another team,” he said.

“We’ve lost some games that we shouldn’t have.

“Last week against Bendigo, credit to them they were a strong side and defensively they were very organised but we had enough chances to win that game too.

“[On Monday night] it fell our way right near the end and when we needed to put our chances way, and we did.”

Despite the defeat to Bendigo in the previous round, Monday night’s result now sees Kingston climb to fifth on the table, a victory Tolios’ side were in desperate need of.

“End of the day, 5-2, we needed that result,” he said.

Among the four second half goals that saw Kingston over line was a hat-trick from forward Max Etheridge.

With the scores locked at 1-1 at half time, Tolios credited the hosts second half performance to a tighter defensive display.

“I just said that they had played well and just conceded a couple of soft goals, other than that I just told them what to do,” he said.

“Defensively I thought we just gave them too much respect and thats why we pushed up high and got our two centre backs to park really tight which sort of stopped them from running at us, because they had some pace out wide which was causing us some headaches in the first half.”
