The entity formerly known as ‘Melbourne United’ will play as Alamein FC from the 2016 NPLW season onwards.
Established by former WPL Victoria side Ashburton United, Alamein applied for an NPL licence in June and was granted one of the eight spots for three years.
‘Melbourne United’ was one of three titles proposed in the licence application, which was in use until now.
Football Federation Victoria made a request for change due to the “broad geographic region” the name refers to.
It is also the same name of the National Basketball League franchise previously known as Melbourne Tigers.
Alamein FC President Alan Cubbon said the switch marked a move from representing the club’s central area, to a greater acknowledgement of the club’s history and heritage.
“The club has adopted the name of the train line that runs through its heartland and ends in the area around Ashburton that was settled by returned servicemen after WWII adjacent to the club’s future home at Warner Reserve,” Cubbon said.
While FC’s colour scheme is expected to remain, the logo will change from its Melbourne United name.
Alamein’s home ground for the upcoming season is also yet to be announced.
The move also reduces the number of teams carrying the ‘United’ name to six in the NPLW.
