Melbourne Victory head coach Kevin Muscat feels his side are ready as they prepare for their maiden foray into the FFA Cup, but is adamant that state league sides such as Bayswater City shouldn’t be underestimated.
Tonight’s match also serves as the clubs first competitive hit out for the season, kick-starting a long and hopefully successful 2014-15 campaign.
“The teams that you play in this competition can’t be underestimated,” Muscat said.
“We’ve certainly given the opposition the utmost respect and we’ll be treating them like that [tonight].
“The main focus has been on ourselves and we’re excited to be playing a competitive game.
“We’ve had quite a few games but this certainly adds a different dynamic to it because there’s no second chances.”
Being a former NSL player, Muscat spoke on the positive aspects that the competition brings in grassroots communities, and heralded the success of the Victorian sides who’ve already progressed.
“I think it’s a wonderful initiative and I think the attention that it’s received so far is testament to that,” the head coach said.
“I made a point of contacting the Victorian teams that are involved in the competition and wishing them well, I know quite a few of the boys that have progressed.
“It’s a wonderful initiative and we pay it every respect that it deserves.”
Being part of his share of FA Cup campaigns in his time in England, Muscat says the competition brings back some memories and he has concentrated on preparation for the competition.
“I had a couple of good runs and played in some semi-final’s of the FA Cup and missed a final through injury so I’ve had a decent run in the competition,” he said.
“It brings back some memories but in all honesty we’ve been so focused and driven on what we’re trying to do this year.
“We’ve brought in a few new players – settling them down and making sure we get our structures right is the most important thing for us at the moment.”
In showing just how serious the Victory are taking this competition, the Victory boss claimed that the approach taken would be no different to that of their Asian Champions League campaign last season.
“It’s no different to the Champions League last year, we’ll pick the best possible team available to go and get a result.
“We’re looking forward to getting across there and seeing a few people turn up as well, I’ve been told there will be a decent crowd.”
Victory will take on Bayswater City at WA Athletics Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 9:30pm AEDT and a live stream available at www.melbournevictory.com.au
