NPL Victoria Team of the Week: Round 8

by Mark Gojszyk 0

GK: Michael Weier (Hume City)
Again commanded his box and mate two high-quality saves to deny Avondale. Didn’t have to face an on-target penalty but nonetheless emerged this week as only one of two keepers to notch up a cleen sheet.

RB: Jeremy Walker (Green Gully)
Like much of his back four, Walker stood tall when it counted especially when Oakleigh came pushing at the end. A well-disciplined performance.

CB: Michael Eagar (South Melbourne)
Dominated in the air especially after South went 2-1 up. Prevented North Geelong from creating many chances and looked composed next to countryman Luke Adams in the centre of defence.

CB: Marco Jankovic (Bentleigh Greens)
With no Jack Webster – one of the league’s premier centre backs – on the pitch, the ever reliable Jankovic stepped up in his absence. The midfielder has been utilised along the backline this season and his size is a big asset at the back. Contributed well to the clean sheet.

LB: Nathan Tidmarsh (Kingston City)
Calm and collected throughout the 90, Tidmarsh put in a consistent shift for Kingston and protected his side well. Give his opponents little to work with.

CM: Tyson Holmes (Bentleigh Greens)
Played a deeper role for John Anastasiadis’ side and Holmes adapted well to help control the midfield. Worked tirelessly in the middle of the park and his distribution to teammates was excellent.

CM: Massimo Murdocca (Avondale FC)
Was on another level to most on the park. Murdocca’s passing was outstanding and he kept winning the ball from tackles and read the play well.

RAM: Francesco Stella (Port Melbourne)
One of the most dangerous players for Port and someone who looked the most likely to create goalscoring opportunites. Stella’s clutch free-kick earned his side a late equaliser.

LAM: Davey van ‘t Schip (Pascoe Vale)
It’s hard to keep this guy out of TOTW. The Dutchman keeps finding a way in on goal and teams just cannot stop him. Was on target twice more against Port – once from the spot and another with a precision finish – to take the current golden boot leader to nine for the season.

ST: Damian Iaconis (Kingston City)
The young striker continues to prove himself in Victoria’s top flight and was at it again. While Kingston’s first half was a write-off, the second burst to life and it was Iaconis at the forefront with a double to take his season tally to six.

ST: Kenny Athiu (Heidelberg United)
Deadly in front of goal, Athiu was instrumental in salvaging Heidelberg a point with a brace, the latter coming in extra time. After a slow-ish start to the campaign in terms of goal tally, Athiu’s tally has now risen to six.

Bench:

Blair Govan (Hume City)
The former Floreat Athena centre-back has been a constant presence in Hume’s backline and was solid in the win against Avondale. Offered good protection especially as Avondale continued to push and prod for an equaliser.

Chris Irwin (Kingston City)
One of Kingston’s most reliable performers week in week out, Irwin again worked hard to win the ball in midfield and tee up teammates in more advanced positions. Was a big contributor to the eventual win.

Ben Surey (Melbourne Knights)
The type of experienced showing one expects from Surey, who was physically imposing and shielded the backline with distinction against a potent Heidelberg outfit. His efforts were almost rewarded with the three points.

Lambros Honos (Bentleigh Greens)
The crafty attacking midfielder’s experience and creativity in the front third continues to trouble opponents. Found himself on the scoresheet from a set-piece and was once again lively for his side.

Sami Nour (Green Gully)
Had a slow start to season and wasn’t always being selected but now Nour looks to have found another gear and has been lively for Gully, reminiscent of the form that made waves at Bulleen last year. Provided a creative spark throughout, dribbling and opening up attacks against Oakleigh.
