Coach: Ian Williamson
2014 finish: 7th 2014 marked a rebuilding stage for Ian Williamson’s squad following a host of experienced departures. The girls from Casey fared reasonably well given its circumstances, falling two places short of a finals berth.
A young and rejuvenated squad provided highlights with a fast expansive game, showcasing plenty of youthful talent. A massive 6-1 victory over Boroondara Eagles in the latter half of the season turned heads, as Williamson’s 4-3-3 formation looked to have found its stride.
Still brandishing a familiar physical philosophy, the young squad however failed to match it in terms of quality and keeping in touch with the big movers at the top of the table – chasing the pack for majority of the season.
Players to Watch: Skipper Laura Croft returns to the middle of the park following a stint in goals last season. The strong and boisterous leader will be a valuable inclusion to the midfield set-up for Williamson, an aspect that was missed at times throughout 2014. Antonia Niteros will play a strong hand alongside Croft in the midfield, proving her worth as a valuable number six in front of the back four last season.
Rachel Binning continues to go from strength-to-strength each year and will be hoping to back up a solid 2014 with an even better campaign. Williamson has reserved special praise for his centre-half over the last two years, displaying quality and experience beyond her teenage years.
What to expect in 2015: Looking at Casey’s first round performance against Heidelberg United, scoring goals appears to be an issue for Williamson’s side. With Brittany Dudley-Smith leaving for South Melbourne, the returning Elsie Hibbert and new signing Melissa Kirby will be expected to fulfill the void with goals this season.
The Welshman however has retained his back four from last season – a strong platform to build on – with the likes of Binning and Harriet Cordner pairing as centre-halves for a third consecutive year.
Finals football looks to be out of the equation for Casey – though not an impossible feat for 2015. Williamson’s young side should finish towards the lower middle half of the table and will aiming for a fast start to avoid a relegation battle and keep in touch with the top five.
