Bayside United captain Kirstie Shearing has promised to focus on the positives out of her young side’s 3-0 defeat to a rampant Bulleen Lions.
Shearing has pointed at the defensive structure in the second half as a particular point to take home with them, insisting they stood firm “under pressure” and were solid playing out from the back.
“It’s going to take a bit of time for us to settle, being a new club and our first game together, but I think as the game went on, we improved and there are a few positives we can take out of tonight. It’s obviously though not the result we were after,” Shearing said.
“The defence held up well under pressure, especially in the second half when we said to play the ball out from the back and push to the midfield. We were able to create a few chances but weren’t able to finish. There’s plenty of positives to take away and we’ll learn from tonight.”
A brace to Taryne Boudreau – including a pearler in the second half – and a single to fellow North American import Jamie Pollock sealed the result after just 50 minutes,
Shearing has picked two things she believes Bayside can work on ahead of next week, firstly believing her side were caught on the back foot in regards to the tempo that Bulleen Lions played at, but believes they’ll begin to match that level as the weeks roll on.
In doing so, she also wants to see improvement in the communication of the younger brigade, to help aid their camaraderie on field.
“It’s a big difference. Pre-season, a lot of the clubs don’t have their full strength squads and neither did we. The intensity tonight was a lot higher than it has been over the last couple of weeks and it’ll probably take a few weeks for us to find our feet,” she said.
“Obviously being a young team, it does put a different spin on things, but we’ll find that as the season goes on, the younger girls will step up.
“I think we need a few girls to be more vocal on the pitch but that will come and it’s something we can work on.”
Coach Graham Dudley will be busy on the training ground throughout the week, in order to get things right for next week.
“He’ll break it down at training a bit more but it’s all positive from Graham,” said Shearing on their analysis process for the week.
“Like we said, we’re just focusing on the positives and that’s all we can really do at this stage, so I’m sure he’ll have plenty to say going into training on Monday.”
