After conceding 11 goals in the past two weeks, Sunshine George Cross coach Renato Liberto is hoping his side can bounce back with a victory over FC Bendigo this afternoon.
Off the back of consecutive losses to Bulleen Lions (6-1) and Kingston City (5-2), Liberto attributed Sunshine’s leaky defence to a host of errors.
“We are just conceding silly goals based on stupid turnovers which are effecting us,” Liberto said.
“We’ve copped 11 goals in two weeks so we’ve got a little bit to work on in those areas but hopefully we will bounce back next week against Bendigo.”
To make matters worse, Liberto’s men now find themselves without the luxury of an available goalkeeper.
With two keepers already sidelined through injury, mid-week signing Lucas Sanella unfortunately received his marching orders in the 90th minute on Monday night, leaving Liberto in a troublesome situation.
“We are in trouble with that now,” he said.
“It’s disappointing because now we don’t have a keeper and it’s going to put us in a bit of a hole.
“Our other keeper has done his quad.
“Unfortunately this has happened but we’ve had a lot of work on the training field to prepare for Bendigo.”
Despite heavily conceding in recent weeks, Sunshine still sit in fourth position on the table, and will see todays clash with FC Bendigo as a chance to resurrect the promising form they displayed earlier in the year.
“We just have to work on not turning the ball over as cheaply as we do,” he said.
“I mean we’ve got good players that can play, we are just making silly mistakes that are costing us. So we will prepare again as we did for this game.
“Our intensity was better than it was last week. Yes we’ve conceded the five but again I think unjust based on the performance last week compared to Bulleen.”
Sunshine George Cross host FC Bendigo on Saturday afternoon at Chaplin Reserve. Kick off is at 3:00PM.
