Three teams are in the draw for the Team App Cup Semi-Finals, and regardless of the outcome between Sandringham SC and Borondara Eagles next Wednesday, it makes for a tantalising draw.
Last Tuesday saw Heidelberg United overcome Brighton Soccer Club 6-0, with six different names getting themselves on the scoresheet. Fielding a near-full strength team, the Bergers were contained well in the first half, with State League 1 outfit Brighton (fifth in their respective league) holding their own at Olympic Village, keeping the game scoreless up until half-time. The floodgates opened in the second half as American Christy Zwolski struck an opener within three minutes of the restart. There were further goals from Elise Mamanu-Gray, defender Lisa Fonua and Emma Gunn, before Julia Nicolaci and Belinda Panella struck late in the piece to give the result a comprehensive look to it.
Wednesday saw State League 1 and former WPL side Cairnlea FC forfeit against Bulleen Lions, making the top flight side the second team to put their name in the hat for the Semi-Final draw, which are currently to be announced. Both Semi-Finals are set to played out on the 8th of July.
The same day saw some football action, as Bundoora continued their domestic league form with a comprehensive 3-0 win over South Melbourne. Claudia Dimasi – offered a rare starting berth in the absence of Jess Pitts and Louisa Bisby – took her chance with open arms, putting in a great display over the course of the game. She opened the scoring with a cracking volley from the edge of the area, before Enza Barilla put Bundy two to the good with another good finish. The game was capped off with an Emma Heckenberg header, deftly executed into the net.
Ladder leaders Boroondara Eagles and 2013 Cup winners Sandringham SC do battle next Wednesday, to put their name into the draw alongside Bulleen Lions and the Uniteds; Bundoora and Heidelberg. It promises to be a clash of the titans in a strong final four, regardless of the result next week.
