The Corner Flag understands Melbourne Victory Women’s star shot-stopper Brianna Davey is a shock omission from Alen Stajcic’s 23 player World Cup roster for the tournament taking place next month in Canada.
The decision is a major blow to the young ‘keeper, who despite featuring in five of the last eight Matildas fixtures, was overlooked for selection for the seventh edition of the women’s competition.
In that period, she hasn’t missed selection for a squad and has been a near permanent fixture in the squad since her debut as a 17-year-old against Haiti in a 4-0 win.
The custodian endured a stop-start season in Victory colours this season, with injury complaints tapering her game time and understudy Cassie Dimovski stepping in for three games.
The goalkeeping stocks set to make the trip up for the tournament include youngster Mackenzie Arnold, NWSL keeper Lydia Williams – on the comeback from injury – and Matildas legend Melissa Barbieri, who makes her fourth World Cup squad.
Steph Catley and Barbieri are expected to be the only Victorian players represented in the squad, with Lisa De Vanna – most recently based in Victoria with Melbourne Victory – also included.
The full squad is set to be announced on Tuesday.
