Three representatives from Melbourne Victory have been selected in the Joeys squad for the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile.
Lucas Derrick, Jonathan Vakirtzis and Pierce Waring were named in a 21-player team named by Tony Vidmar to depart on October 7 for a pre-tournament camp, with the first match against Germany on October 17.
The Joeys have been drawn in Group C alongside Germany, Mexico, and Argentina, and will play all three group games at the Estadio Municipal Nelson Oyarzun Arenas in Chillan.
Matches against Mexico and Argentina will be on the 21st and 24th of October respectively
“The 2015 FIFA-U17 World Cup is just around the corner and we can’t wait to play against three excellent teams,” Vidmar said.
“We will be throwing everything at our opponents in the group stage to give us the best possible chance to progress to the next round.”
The top two teams from each group automatically qualifies for the Round of 16, while four third-placed teams will also advance.
All three Victory players have already been involved in qualification for the tournament, consolidating their place in the squad.
The selection marks a rapid rise for Vakirtzis and Derrick since being signed by Victory’s youth team from Boris Seroshtan’s NTC program.
