Despite the club being only a few months into their life span, Keilor United have announced they’re changing their name to Calder United SC to “better reflect [their] representation” within their area.
The re-naming – alongside a new logo – is the first of what is expected to be a number of name changes across clubs in the league ahead of the debut WNPL season.
Club President Eric Psarianos spoke about why United decided to opt for a name change, and how they plan on building a “sustainable brand” in which to build future success.
“You may recognise us initially as Keilor United, we are one in the same and have recently undergone a name change to better reflect our representation across western and north western suburbs, in accordance with FFV selection criteria,” Psarianos said.
“This is quite obviously a landmark moment in the development of women’s football, particularly in western and north western suburbs.
“As recently published by FFV the sport of football and female participation in the game in Australia has surpassed even the game of netball, so we are all very excited by this new venture and what it will mean for female football in [the area].
“We are determined to build an elite platform for female footballer’s to develop their craft, whilst at the same time afford opportunity for those same girls to excel at the beautiful game if they so desire.
“We plan to work hand in hand with as many local community clubs as we can and build a strong and sustainable brand through community engagement and activities to help promote more female participation in and around western and north western suburbs.”
The coaching staff for Calder United has also been finalised, with Casey Comets’ long-standing former coach Ian Williamson jumping on board as the U15’s coach, as well as providing senior assistance to head coach Mark Torcaso.
