The month of June was a stellar one for FC Bulleen Lions, as they piled on 20 goals and finally started to take some of the chances they were creating for themselves. At the forefront of all of this was trequartista Cindy Lay whose performances steering a young, hungry Bulleen side towards a finals position were first class. Stocky’s Scribbles spoke to the playmaker after her stellar performances in Round 11-14 earned her the WPL Player of the Month award for June.

Congratulations on receiving the WPL Player of the Month award for June! How have you assessed your own game?
Thank you for selecting me. I’ve been pleased with my performance, especially over the last month. Bobby has played me in a more attacking role and I think I’ve adapted to this position well. There are always areas where I can improve on, and for me I believe my finishing has let me down on a few occasions, so I will definitely continue working on this.
You’ve been a key part in the form that Bulleen put in during the month. What has changed at the club since a slow start?
I guess we needed a few games to gel more as a team. Also, I feel like there is more belief and confidence at the club now compared to the start of the season.
You’ve plundered 20 goals in your last three games before this rounds game against the Senior NTC. How is it working with so many class players around you?
All the girls are class, and I love playing with every one of them. When we are all on the same page, our class as a team is definitely shown on the football pitch and it’s a real joy to watch.
Speaking of class players around you, how has it been watching Caitlin Friend’s progression further back on the pitch?
I really enjoy playing with Caitlin. She is a quality player and we both understand each other very well which is why we link up so well during the games. She brings that extra experience to the team and she never ceases to amaze me with what she does on the football pitch.
Bulleen and Bobby have been big promoters of Victorian talent. So much so that the overwhelming majority of your team has come through an NTC system. How is it working with people that have had that same sort of experience and football upbringing as yourself?
It definitely makes it easier since most of my team mates were bought up through the NTC program and so have been taught to play a similar style of football. Everyone understands how we want to play as a team and what is expected of them as individual players in their particular position.
Is the aim to get back into the W-League setup come the end of the season?
Yes, this is definitely one of my goals that I am working towards. I feel prepared and want to give W-league another shot.
What’s the aim now? You’ve returned to form of late. Is it finals or nothing for the squad?
Yes, the Bulleen squad definitely have the ability to reach finals and lift up that trophy and the end of the season.
