Young gun Williams swaps Bergers for Cannons

Oakleigh Cannons have signed young defensive utility Jakob Williams from Heidelberg United in a move that has raised the ire of the Bergers heirarchy.

The former Newcastle Jets and Western Sydney Wanderers youth player was considered an important member in George Katsakis’ team, however was lured to Jack Edwards Reserve by Arthur Papas on the eve of the mid-season transfer window.

A versatile defence-minded player that can play across the backline or in a holding midfield role, the Canberra product also spent time with the Joeys in his youth, and arrived at Olympic Village from Marconi mid-season last year as United secured 3rd place, where he rose to prominence with a brace against Ballarat Red Devils.

The 21-year-old was in and out of a starting spot this season, scoring his first goal of the campaign in an 8-2 demolition of Green Gully.

The signing continues Oakleigh’s quick movement in the transfer market, having already signed Mirjan Pavlovic from Sydney, while releasing Liam Boland to Green Gully.

Meanwhile, former Oakleigh captain Evan Christodoulou is expected to return to Heidelberg, having spent time at Olympic Village in 2011-12.
