The Whittlesea Ranges have made their third addition of the mid-season transfer window by signing ex-Ranges defender Tobias Haegele after the departure of star centre-half Janiel Gomes Da Silva to the Oakleigh Cannons.
Haegele began his footballing journey in Australia with Ranges as he came from the German fourth tier, making 41 appearances under Vinko Buljubasic. He was awarded the club’s best and fairest in his stunning debut campaign in 2015, and later on in 2016 he had a stellar season as he was a focal point to Buljubasic’s defence as the Ranges fought for promotion to Victoria’s top flight.
Haegele departed the Ranges for the 2017 season as he joined State League One powerhouse Altona Magic, but that was short lived, only making 8 appearances.
He will have big shoes to fill for the departed Silva, who departs the Ranges after 16 league appearances and two crucial goals to salvage a last minute 2-2 draw against Moreland City and most recently the winner against Melbourne Victory in their 2-1 triumph.
The Brazilian joined the Ranges from Moreland United in the pre-season transfer period. Prior to his move to Australia he played in the Brazilian second tier for Guarani FC.
Silva joins the Victorian top-flight side Oakleigh Cannons as they look to cement their finals credentials for the 2017 NPL season, adding depth to a backline that has consisted of Steve Pantelidis, Adrian Chiappetta and Aron Wilford but had been ravaged by injuries in recent times, often leaving a makeshift backline during games.
Silva was thankful to the Whittlesea Ranges for the opportunity he was given in NPL 2 and is now looking to add to his superb season by moving into the top flight.
