Avondale boost keeper stocks with Maynard signing

Avondale FC has boosted its goalkeeper stocks with the signing of Chris Maynard from Heidelberg United, acting quickly to fill the gap left by Anthony Saric who has departed for Dandenong Thunder.

Maynard was a bit part player in South Melbourne’s title winning campaign in 2014, displacing Jason Saldaris towards the end of the season to make the number one jersey his own.

Having spent a considerable amount of time at South during the 2015 pre-season, the 21-year-old eventually signed on at Heidelberg, where he played understudy to Griffin McMaster.

But a lack of first-team action would’ve no doubt left the shot-stopper frustrated, and the move to Avondale may present a better opportunity for playing time under Anthony Barbieri.

He brings to close a short three-month spell with the club, which saw him make one appearance in the FFA Cup and no league appearances.

Avondale and current first choice keeper Frazer Siddall have kept two clean sheets so far in 2014 and Maynard will be hoping he can play his part in more in the future.
