Heidelberg coach John Krygios was remaining positive after a 3-0 loss to rivals Bundoora United on the weekend, stating a belief that results are just around the corner.
Mindful of Bundoora’s attacking power coupled with his side’s recent record of leaking goals, Krygios started the game with a more defensive outlook.
However, the move didn’t quite work out as Heidelberg failed to deal with three set pieces delivered from Tyla Jay Vlajnic.
“I think our downfall today was [that we] just didn’t deal with the ball into the 18-yard-box. That’s the reality of it all. The three dead balls cost us dearly and that was the bottom line. Two corners and a free kick outside the box and our defence was not aggressive enough in meeting the ball and clearing it,” Kyrgios said.
His conservative approach having yielded little success, the Heidelberg coach set about changing to a more aggressive formation as he chased a result after falling behind.
“When you’re chasing the game you need to change it and be a bit more offensive which is what we did in the second half and I think we’re getting better and better and the results will come there’s no doubts about that,” he said.
While his side did look disjointed in attack, particularly in the first half, Krygios put it down to the fact his new players needed more game time together to improve.
“We got a few new players that have just come onboard and you probably saw the quality of them in the second half, nice and strong and I’m sure once they get used to the way we play we’ll be a better side for it,” he said.
There’s no doubt he is looking to defender Michelle Verzi to help the Berger’s get back to winning ways though.
“Michelle Verzi gave us a lot of structure in the back – very vocal, very authoritative, a great reader of the game and real quick. So she gave us a lot of good structure at the back and I thought she was really good today,” he said.
Heidelberg play host to Sandringham this weekend, a game which will surely pose another test for Krygios and his young side.
