Altona City’s stand-in coach Stephen Scerri identified a lack of accountability as being behind his side’s disappointing 2-0 loss to Preston Lions at Genis Steel Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Although buoyed by the way his side began, he conceded that their discipline was what brought about their downfall.
“I think we started well and created a good chance early. I think in the first half, we were better than we have been in recent weeks,” he explained.
“Unfortunately I think there were instances when we weren’t accountable in chasing players back. There were two instances when players were left to run freely and as a result you pay the price.”
The style of football is something that incoming coach Ricardo Marchioli will have to address, according to Scerri.
“We tended to get a bit direct and our passing game was quite poor to be honest, but that’s just the way it goes I guess,” he said.
“I’ve actually recruited another coach to replace Nathan [Rogers] which is good.
“He’s obviously a great coach and will teach them a lot in terms of how to play football with confidence. And hopefully he’ll entice a couple of other young players that might want to develop their football as well,” he asserted.
Altona will continue to seek their first points of the season when they return home to face Cairnlea on Sunday afternoon.
