Coach: John Kyrgios
2014 finish: 8th Following a disappointing end to their 2014 campaign, the Pythagoras’ women will be looking to turn over a new page, under the new management of John Kyrgios. Having recently taken up the gig of turning around Box Hill, having moved from Heidelberg United where he won the WPL coach of the ear award.
Last year saw Box Hill finish in a disappointing 8th, having developed a reputation as one of the powerhouse sides in the league. While they never looked in danger of the drop, they weren’t competitive enough for a finals berth either, succumbing to six losses in their final six fixtures, the last of which was a humiliating 7-0 loss to Bundoora. That’ll stick deep in the craw of the Box Hill camp, who are ready for a season of redemption.
New signings: John Kyrgios has turned to his old side to ring in the recruitment, with Penny Bakopoulos, Angie Rassias, Renee Zairis and Elise Kyrgios all joining from Heidelberg United to assist the rebuild of the proud club. With a core group of players all moving from the same club, their game sense and understanding should be at a strong level, so expect the former Bergers’ to play a big role.
Players to watch: Despite being statistically one of the weaker teams defensively in 2014, a lot has changed since the end of last season. Melissa Barbieri will have a large role to play in the process of turning Box Hill’s fortunes around, as will classy midfield utility Ellie Brush who can unlock a defence with her vision, all while keeping it tidy at the back.

What to expect in 2015: Box Hill’s disappointing 8th placing last season should be far removed from the memory at the end of this one. With a vast array of experience in the squad, complimented by a number of wonderful new signings, Pythagoras look to be a side that will threaten the very best in the league. A finals place, like Kyrgios is targeting, appears to be the pass mark, however don’t be surprised to see this outfit figure in the final two weekends of the season, whilst a deep cup run should surprise nobody. A return to the elite.
