The Melbourne Knights have mutually parted ways with Eric Vassiliadis five games into his tenure with the embattled two-time NSL Champions staring down the threat of relegation from the top flight.
The 42 year-old lasted just 35 days in the job having initially been appointed at the end of May following the departures of head coach Andrew Marth and his assistant Frank Juric.
His record at Somers Street makes for grim viewing drawing just one of his five league encounters in addition to four defeats, the latest being Friday night’s 4-1 capitulation at JL Murphy Reserve against Vassiliadis’ old side Port Melbourne Sharks.
That defeat came just seven days after an embarrassing 5-0 home loss at hands of the Bulleen Lions.
Things looked bright at the beginning of his tenure with the Knights suffering narrow honourable losses to Pascoe Vale and Bentleigh Greens respectively before drawing 1-1 away to Kingston City.
However the two recent defeats have been heavy blows to the 2014 Dockerty Cup Champions who occupy the relegation play-off spot on the ladder, two points adrift of automatic safety.
In that time, Vassiliadis had also brought in five mid-season signings into the dressing room which included Nick Apostolopoulos, Anthony Duzel, Kamal Ibrahim, Mehdi Martin and Shaun Timmins.
All five have struggled to make an impact thus far with all four goals of Vassiliadis’ short-lived tenure being scored by English marksman Tom Cahill, who has now hit eight goals for the campaign.
The club is yet to make an announcement on a replacement and face a tricky run of fixtures in the following three weeks as they play three of the top four teams on the competition ladder.
Genuinely sad I couldn't bring happiness to this great club in 5 wks. Wish the club & community the best & hope they can stick together.
